It can be trained

Having a name for what you feel changes what you perceive. With the name, you recognise it in another cup and can tell someone without losing it along the way.

You train by gathering references. Smell something, name it and smell it again until the name and the thing stick together.

The apparatus you perceive with can be educated, just like the ear.
