The shape

An espresso cup is not a miniature cylinder.

The walls should be thin at the rim so that the lip barely feels the edge. And the bottom needs to be curved: that curve guides the falling coffee during extraction, allowing the liquid to roll over itself and preserve the emulsion of oils and the texture of the crema without breaking it.

The shape of the cup protects what the machine took twenty-five seconds to build.
